I have difficulty making a good layout for my text (E16).

The most important rules for text layout are:

Always leave only one space margin after: A full stop (.), a comma (,), a colon (;), a closing quotation mark (’), question marks (?) and exclamation marks (!);

Do not hesitate to use italics to attract the reader’s attention to the most important passages;

Use ‘indents’ intelligently. Consider their effect on the image of your text in the final stage of editing;

Chapters should always begin at a new page, preferably an odd page;

Sections can begin anywhere, but preferably not at the bottom of a page;

Do not call a ‘section’ by name (‘Section 1.8’), but write down the number and/or the heading only;

Use ‘tab’ or one or two spaces before the first lines of a new paragraph. Be consistent throughout your text;

Avoid too many short paragraphs on one page;

Avoid paragraphs longer than one page;

Always check that a title or heading is not positioned at the bottom of a page, while the rest of the text is on the next page. Also avoid that a page starts with final sentence of a previous paragraph;

Make sure that your tables and figures are on one page;

Formulate short headings – keep them on one line;

Formulate active and direct headings;

Always use titles and headings as support and guidance for the reader. Never use them as a substitute for your text. Do not refer to the title in your text.
